Structural Engineering across New Mexico

New Mexico's structural design is wind- and snow-governed: high winds sweep the eastern plains, and mountain snow loads are significant in the north (Taos, Santa Fe, Los Alamos). Seismic risk is low to moderate. Expansive and collapsible soils occur in several regions, and Santa Fe's historic districts add design-review constraints on structural alterations.

The New Mexico Board of Licensure for Professional Engineers and Professional Surveyors licenses PEs. Firms must hold a certificate of authorization with a New Mexico-licensed PE in responsible charge. Sealed plans are required for commercial building permits.

New Mexico enforces a statewide energy conservation code for commercial buildings based on the IECC, administered through the Construction Industries Division (CID). Compliance is shown at permit application, including in jurisdictions where CID itself is the authority having jurisdiction.

The state's Construction Industries Division (CID) is the building authority across much of New Mexico, with Albuquerque, Las Cruces, and a few other cities running their own permitting. Because CID covers so much territory, state-level submittal standards apply on most projects.
